WHO IS KAWS?
Born Brian Donnelly in 1974, Jersey City, KAWS (American) is a creative powerhouse that straddles the worlds of street art, design, and animation. His artistic journey began in elementary school, where he found himself captivated by the graffiti he saw around him. These early influences from his community soon evolved into a fascination with the works of established artists like Gerhard Richter, Klaus Oldenberg, and Chuck Close.

The 1990s marked a turning point for KAWS. He took to the streets of New York City as a graffiti artist, leaving his mark on billboards, bus stops, and phone booths. While honing his craft, he earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts. Interestingly, his artistic talents even landed him a freelance gig with Disney, where he contributed to iconic animations like 101 Dalmatians, Daria, and Doug.

KAWS's artistic duality became clear as his street art gained recognition. The very same works that adorned cityscapes became highly sought-after collectibles. His artistic explorations continued as he traveled internationally, working in Paris, London, Germany, and Japan. This period also saw him receive the prestigious Pernod Liquid Art Award in 1998.

The late 1990s witnessed another defining moment for KAWS – the birth of his now-famous limited-edition toys. These collectibles, particularly popular in Japan, catapulted him to international fame. His collaborative spirit further expanded his reach, with projects like redesigning iconic figures like Mickey Mouse, the Michelin Man, and SpongeBob SquarePants alongside Nigo (Japanese, b.1970) for A Bathing Ape.

KAWS's artistic influence extends beyond limited-edition toys. He has held solo exhibitions at renowned institutions worldwide, including The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art and the High Museum of Art. One specific exhibition, "OriginalFake" at the Bape Gallery in Tokyo, even featured a sculpture, "Wonderful World," that fetched a staggering US$400,000. Another notable project, the traveling exhibition "Beautiful Losers," solidified his artistic impact across Europe and the United States.

Today, KAWS continues to push the boundaries of art and design. Still residing and creating in Brooklyn, New York, where you can see him shoveling money in his BRINKS truck daily.
